Melissa Hipwell

Student at Holy Family University
I graduated from Calvary Christian Academy in 2006, where I was Student Government President and Salutatorian of my class.  When I started at Holy Family, I majored in Elementary and Special Education and was an English peer tutor at the CAE.  However, my interests changed, as is the case with many college students! I now enjoy majoring in Psychology and Business and working as the Administrative Assistant at the CAE. As the Assistant, I am active not only in the recruiting and training of new tutors but also in all the operational phases of the Center. I, aside from the CAE, am actively involved at my church as well as in several clubs on campus. If you come in the Center, you just may find me running around at high speed!

Meet Our Peer Tutors
Sara Cashin
I am a 2006 Neshaminy High School graduate.  I am majoring in English Literature with a minor in Spanish, which is my primary interest. At the Center for Academic Enhancement, I tutor Spanish. I have had the pleasure of interacting with native speakers of the Spanish language through Holy Family, as well as the St. Mary Parenting Resource Center. On campus, I am actively involved in Fusion, which is the University’s multicultural club. Contributing to Tri-Lite, the school’s newspaper, in both Spanish and English columns, has enabled me to develop a deeper appreciation for, and understanding of, language. Realizing that learning a foreign language can be a difficult and frustrating task, my goal is to provide support and assistance to students of all skill levels. Please do not hesitate to visit me on the second floor of the Library. No question is insignificant! Everyone is respected and welcome.

I graduated from New Hope-Solebury High School in 2008. My major is Secondary Education/Math. I enjoy peer tutoring because, as a prospective teacher, this is essentially what I plan on doing for my career. I’m in Holy Family University's math club, The πgers. I am also a Student Ambassador for the college. People tend to think that math is excessively difficult to do, but in reality it’s not. If you are having any trouble at all in math or any other subject, don’t hesitate to come to the Center for Academic Enhancement for some extra help.

I am a Nursing major at Holy Family University.  I graduated from Saint Basil Academy, a small, Catholic, all-girls school.  In high school, I took Honors English courses, and excelled in A.P. English during my senior year.  I am a passionate bookworm, loving authors ranging from Jane Austen to Agatha Christie to J.K. Rowling.  Besides being a CAE English peer tutor, I am also very active in my church's college and career group.  I am willing to help other students with any struggles involving writing skills, reading comprehension, or anything else related to English.  I hope that by seeing my love for the English language, others may fall in love with it too!

As a foreign student, majoring in Biochemistry, I know exactly what it is like to learn English the hard way. It is not only the mechanics of a language one has to get a good grip of, but also the "language habits," i.e. specific expressions, ways of saying things, jokes, arguments. It is vital for the language learning process that it be active and powered by one's curiosity to gain direct access to new information, culture, literature, every day life and, most importantly perhaps, new people with whom to communicate. I hope I can instill this attitude in my ESL students and be of use in their learning process. Welcome to a whole new world!

Marek Kowalski
I came to Holy Family as an international student from Kielce, a small city in Poland. I am majoring in Biochemistry. During the first semester of my freshman year, I started working in the Center for Academic Enhancement as an English as a Second Language (ESL) Peer Tutor. We have enhanced the  ESL tutoring program  in order to help students of different native languages feel comfortable in and increase  proficiency in the challenges of the University’s academic curriculum. It seems like it must be working since I still have the job! Even if you are a fluent English speaker and writer, and all you need is to discuss some typical issues of a foreign student, you are truly invited.

Brittany La Couture
I graduated from DePaul Catholic High school in New Jersey where I was a "Vincentian Scholar," meaning I carried at least 5 honors or AP classes in any given semester, and maintained at least an A- average. I am now a sophomore at Holy Family; however, I plan to graduate early. I am a Psychology major, and I am working toward a minor in philosophy, which I hope will help me to achieve my goal of going to law school. I am also a member of the volleyball team, SAAC, and a Student Ambassador. I am really excited to be able to work with other students, to discuss topics in philosophy and psychology, and to work toward building a better understanding of these subjects for my peers and myself. Psychology is a social science and philosophy is a humanity- and really what better way is there to learn a social science or a humanity than through interacting and developing ideas with other people?

Hi Everyone!! I graduated Notre Dame High School in 2001 and am so excited to be at Holy Family as a full time student.  My major is Psychology with a double minor in Pre-Law and History.  I hope to attend law school when I graduate.  I love everything about Holy Family and feel blessed to be working with the CAE.  It’s a warm and inviting place that everyone should check out at some point!  I am currently a math and Spanish peer tutor and also a Student Fellow for Contemporary Math.  The Student Fellow program is a new and exciting program in which I tutor exclusively students in participating classes.  The best feeling is finally figuring out a math problem that you’ve been working on; the key to success in math is to believe in yourself!  I hope to see you soon! “All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.” -Buddha

I graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 2007. I am currently majoring in Biology at Holy Family. Science, particularly biology, has always been a subject of great interest and curiosity for me. Here, at the Center for Academic Enhancement, I tutor mathematics and physics; I am always willing to provide an extra hand to those who are having a problem with math and physics. I am also involved in the Albertans Science Club and the Social and Behavioral Sciences Club. I enjoy hiking and camping with my friends. I love tutoring, and find that it is the best way to teach and to be taught. My goal is to help the tutees understand the mechanics of errors that they make and share the joy of learning. I welcome any questions and problems. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do for you, and can't wait for you to ask for my help! Remember, always, what a famous teacher said: "The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple." ~S. Gudder
